Across the United States, half of the children born to low-income parents become poor adults. Children not involved in after-school and summer programs are three times more likely to use drugs, skip school and become teen parents.

Heads Up offers a safe alternative. Founded in 1996, Heads Up provides children from some of the toughest and most under resourced neighborhoods in the District of Columbia with the right opportunities and structure to learn and succeed. Today, Heads Up’s efforts include daily after-school and summer programs for more than 900 children who attend enrichment activities where more than 350 college students from seven local universities work as tutors, mentors, and teachers.

The CharityWorks partnership allowed Heads Up to expand programs into two additional DC Public Schools and to increase enrollment in schools currently participating. Annually, the funding casts a safety net to an additional 300 at-risk children and their families.

“Heads Up is a model program that delivers many critical resources to young people in Washington, DC, while asking them to give back to their own neighborhoods… I applaud you for the example you are already setting.”
