In 2000, low income housing had reached crisis proportions in the United States. In Northern Virginia alone, over 22,000 families were waiting for housing assistance, yet Fairfax County was ranked “the 6th least poor” county in the Nation. Homeownership is one of the best ways to break the cycle of government dependence. By raising $375,000 to purchase land to build homes, CharityWorks helped 20 families become self-sufficient. Additionally, CharityWorks volunteers built a townhome for a single mother and her daughter. The home, designated as “The First Ladies |
House,” was built by women and was completed in August 2002.
